HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis duo of Giorgia Pozzan and Joanna Kacprzyk highlighted the final round of action at the Cougar Fall Draw Sunday, winning the doubles title of their respective flight. The Cougars closed out a successful fall season, totaling four individual titles in four tournaments played.
"The positive that I'm taking out of the fall season is that we realize that we're talented and have potential," said head coach John Severance. "We know we'll have to work a lot harder to meet all of our goals that we've set for the 2011 season."
Pozzan and Kacprzyk won all four matches in their first action together this season to top the field of 16 teams in their doubles flight.
The Cougar tandem began the day with an 8-1 rout of Sam Houston State's Postnikova and Dubyanskaya to enter the final round. The UH duo jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the title match before the Lee College pair of Kinarkina and Gomez pushed the deficit to 6-3. Pozzan and Kacprzyk proved to be too much however, putting the match away by a score of 8-4.
Pozzan, a newcomer from Lacchiarella, Italy, took the court once again after only a brief break to compete in the singles finals, falling to Arkansas State's Jenny Herring by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Pozzan topped the Cougars during the tournament season, posting a combined record of 19-5.
Both Maja Kazimieruk and Elena Kazakova dropped their title matches in heartbreaking fashion. Kazimieruk led the first set by a score of 4-3, but Sam Houston State's Nadezhda Dubyanskay won three straight games to claim the opening frame. Kazimieruk battled back to take the second set by a score of 6-3, but dropped a thrilling third-set tiebreaker by a score of 12-10.
Kazakova, a senior from Moscow, Russia, jumped out to a 7-5 victory in the opening set over Berenice Van Den Bergh of Texas State. In the following set, Kazakova rallied back from being down 5-2 to win four straight games before losing in a tiebreaker, 7-6(6). Van Den Bergh would carry that momentum into the third-set tiebreaker, outlasting Kazakova by a score of 11-9.
The Cougars kick off the 2011 dual match season on Feb. 4 against St. Edward's.
