Houston Tennis Drops Season Opener at No. 3 Baylor

WACO, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback at third-ranked Baylor in its season opener Friday afternoon in Waco, Texas.
The Bears opened play with wins at the top two doubles positions to claim the first point of the match. Houston's Jo Garvey and Bryony Hunter dropped an 8-2 decision to Baylor's Sona Novakova and Diana Nakic, while the Cougar duo of Giorgia Pozzan and Dionne Sanders fell to Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk at the No. 2 position by a score of 8-1.
The doubles portion was highlighted by the Houston tandem of Maja Kazimieruk and Joanna Kacprzyk, who teamed up to knock off Baylor's Abby Stainback and Aya Bara at the No. 3 spot by a score of 8-7(6). The Cougar duo began the match trailing 4-0, and after pulling even at four points apiece, was down 7-6 before rallying to take the contest.
Nakic led off singles play for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sanders at the top spot, and 19th-ranked Novakova followed with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Hunter at the No. 2 position.
Stanivuk clinched the match for Baylor with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Garvey at the No. 4 slot.
Kacprzyk also highlighted singles play for the Cougars, gutting out a 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 win over Stainback at the No. 5 position for the lone Houston victory.
The Cougars return to action on Jan. 28 at Centenary.
