HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team has taken advantage of the break between the fall and spring seasons, reaching out to the community on various occasions recently.
Houston tennis newcomers Giorgia Pozzan, Jo Garvey, Dionne Sanders and Celia Fraser all got in the holiday spirit by visiting underprivileged kids between the ages of 4-13 at The Downtown Club of Houston. The four student-athletes teamed up with the Rice tennis squads to direct clinics, teach tennis fundamentals and conduct a question-and-answer session.
The entire team followed up with a trip to Texas Children's Hospital before the Thanksgiving break. The Cougar tennis squad stayed for around an hour, visiting with approximately 20 children.
Senior leader Joanna Kacprzyk took the initiative to set up the visit after hearing about the Texas Children's Hospital at a student-athlete advisory committee meeting. The Warsaw, Poland, native wanted to do something for others in need, and her fellow classmates were more than happy to help out.
"It was amazing to see the excitement and smiles on the children's faces as we were signing autographs," said Kacprzyk. "It was a great experience for all of us and we definitely plan on making another visit next semester."
The Cougars open the spring season against St. Edward's on Feb. 4, 2011.
