SPRING, Texas - The University of Houston softball team got the bats rolling on Sunday, earning wins over Baylor and Alvin Community College in the final day of the Spring Klein College Classic.
Although the fall schedule doesn't count towards the Cougars' record, it does serve as a way to evaluate the team in a game environment. After a pair of tough losses on Saturday, head coach Kyla Holas challenged her team to step up.
"I do feel like some of them really stepped up and responded," Holas said. "I thought Reina Gaber did that, as well as Haley (Outon). She shook some of the confidence issues that had been bothering her and put some very good swings on the ball today. Brooke Lathan did the same. She had a tough week of practice and after sitting for most of the day yesterday, she came out and performed like a leader on the offensive and defensive side of the ball."
Game One - Houston 5, Baylor 4
Freshman Haley Outon plated the first run of the fall when she crushed a line-drive solo homerun to centerfield to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
Outon's blast came in response to a four-run spot the Bears put together in the previous inning. A walk, a single and an error led of Baylor's rally before a shallow pop up brought one run in and set the table for junior Megan Turk.
Turk drove a foul ball over the left field fence before adjusting and sailing a long ball to right center, giving the Bears the 4-0 lead.
Outon's bomb was the first step in chipping away at the deficit, and by the fifth, the rest of the Cougars were determined to help. A two-run triple by freshman Stesha Brazil and a pair of two-out RBIs from Lathan and senior Angela Spittler comprised the offensive onslaught. The four-run spot of their own gave the Cougars the 5-4 lead heading into the seventh.
Sophomore starter Bailey Watts worked her way out of a two-on, one-out jam in the Bears' final at bat to seal the Cougar victory.
Game Two - Houston 8, Alvin Community College 3
Senior Baillie Lott made her first start of the weekend, throwing two innings and allowing two runs before senior Amanda Crabtree came in for the third, fourth and fifth.
Freshman Sydney Gerbracht stepped in to close out the last two innings of the weekend, and surrendered just one unearned run.
At the plate, the Cougars were led by Lathan's monster 4-RBI day, going 2-for-2 with a homerun. Gaber went 1-for-1 with a walk and run driven in while Outon added another RBI in her 1-for-2 afternoon.
The Cougars continue their fall schedule next weekend at the Sugar Land College Classic.
