HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team won back-to-back games against Galveston College and Texas State on day one of the Sugar Land College Classic.
The offensive stride the Cougars looked to be hitting at the conclusion of last weekend picked up where it left off in Saturday's game one while the pitching staff held Texas State to a single hit in game two.
Freshman Haley Outon tagged a bomb in each game to highlight the potent offensive performance.
"She had a rough week at practice, going through the emotional adjustments that come with being a freshman," Holas said. "She got to the point that softball is what she has and she's going to go with it, and she did that. She just went out there and played ball today."
Game One: Houston 8, Galveston College 1
The Cougars racked up eight runs on 12 hits while holding the Whitecaps to a single run on just five hits.
Freshman Sydney Gerbracht made her first fall start, surrendering just the only run while striking out three in her three innings of work. Senior Baillie Lott relieved her in the fourth inning and stayed for the rest of the game, throwing four flawless innings. She also tallied three strikeouts.
At the plate, the Cougars were led by Outon's homerun amidst 3-for-4, three RBI performance. Senior Jennifer Klinkert joined the fall season's long ball club, as her solo blast highlighted her 2-for-3 game. Sophomore Ashleigh Jones chipped in with a 2-for-4 effort, crossing the plate twice.
"I felt like we showed up and so did all of the adjustments that we had been working on last week," Holas said. "We were able to get better all last week at practice and it was great to see us execute that today."
Game Two: Houston 4, Texas State 2
Senior Amanda Crabtree and sophomore Bailey Watts combined to toss a one-hitter against the Bobcats in the nightcap.
Crabtree started in the circle, sitting eight down on strikes and allowing one run in her 3.2 innings. Watts threw the remainder of the game, striking out four and allowing the other Texas State run.
The offensive wealth spread throughout the afternoon, as freshman Stesha Brazil led the Cougars in game two - aside from Outon teeing off for the second time in as many games. Brazil notched a 2-for-2 effort and scored a run while Klinkert walked twice and posted another RBI.
The Cougars wrap up their fall season on Sunday when they take on 2010 NCAA Super Regional team, Louisiana-Lafayette and San Jacinto College at noon and 2 p.m., respectively. Both games will be played at Imperial Park in Sugar Land, Texas.
