Two Cougars Advance in Singles Play at USTA/ITA Regional

HOUSTON - University of Houston women's tennis players Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan both won two matches to begin play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional in Waco, Texas, Friday to advance to the round of 32 of the singles main draw.
"As a coaching staff we're very pleased with Bryony and Giorgia," said head coach John Severance. "It's a credit to their hard work and dedication in the off-season to have this success, but we have to keep working. Today's in the books and we're eager to go back to work tomorrow."
Hunter, a sophomore from Harlow, U.K., led off play with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over UTEP's Rebecca Calvillo, before rolling past Maria Martinez of UT Arlington by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Hunter improved to 5-2 on the season and will face Texas Tech's Carolina Starch on Saturday in the round of 32.
Pozzan, a junior transfer from Lacchiarella, Italy, continued her stellar play this fall with two straight-set wins to enter the round of 32. Pozzan defeated Dasha Abdrakhmanova of UTEP by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and cruised past Imke Jagau of Sam Houston State, 6-2, 6-2. Pozzan improved to 8-1 as a Cougar and will face off against the tournament's No. 1 seed on Saturday, Aeriel Ellis of Texas.
Sophomore Maja Kazimieruk also opened with a win over Carolina Barboza of North Texas (6-1, 6-0) before falling to No. 9 Mariayeni Gutierrez of Lamar (6-1, 6-0). Kazimieruk, who claimed the singles title at the Rice Invitational, pushed her tournament record to 6-2.
Joanna Kacprzyk dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Baylor's Karolina Filipiak to open play, but bounced back with her fifth victory of the season against Micaela Silva of UTSA (6-1, 6-2). The senior from Warsaw, Poland, will meet Alicia Porte of Lamar in the third round of the consolation draw on Saturday.
The Cougars open doubles play as well on Saturday, as Kacprzyk and Kazimieruk team up against Texas Tech's Nikki Sanders and Carolina Starck, and the freshmen duo of Jo Garvey and Dionne Sanders meet Nikola Matovicova and Katarina Micochova of UT Arlington. The Houston tandem of Hunter and Pozzan received a first-round bye and will compete in the round of 32 at 11:00 a.m.
