HOUSTON - University of Houston senior forward Courtney Taylor was named the Preseason Conference USA Player of the Year, while fellow senior Brittney Scott also earned a spot on the preseason all-conference team, the league announced on Thursday.
Taylor returns for her senior year as the reigning C-USA Player of the Year after averaging 15.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during the 2009-10 season. Taylor became the fifth player in program history to achieve the feat and the first since Chandi Jones won the final of three-straight awards in 2004.
The Crockett, Texas, native has put together one of the most decorated careers in Houston women's basketball history, ranking 11th in career scoring with 1,228 points and second all-time with a 9.6-career rebounding average. Taylor also holds the school record in career double-doubles with 40, surpassing Sancho Lyttle's 35 double-doubles set from 2003-05.
Scott joins her classmate on the preseason all-conference squad after a standout junior season that saw the Orange, Texas, native lead the Cougars in points per game (17.3), free-throw percentage (.813), 3-point field goals (84) and minutes played (32.6), en route to C-USA Second-Team honors. The 84 made 3-pointers ranked second all-time for a single-season at Houston.
Scott tallied 29 points in the WNIT loss to Texas Tech on March 18 to surpass the 1,000-point mark, joining Taylor as the 19th and 20th Cougars to accomplish the feat. The upcoming season marks only the third time Houston has had two 1,000-point club members return to the starting lineup. Sharion Higgins and Kip Anderson teamed up in 1980-81 and Sonya Watkins and Vickey Finch played together in 1985-86.
The Cougars open the 2010-11 season against UT Arlington on Nov. 14 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
