Kazimieruk Claims Singles Title at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - University of Houston women's tennis player Maja Kazimieruk earned the singles title at the Rice Invitational on Sunday at Jake Hess Stadium in Houston.
The sophomore from Poznan, Poland, rolled past Alex Rasch of Rice by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to highlight action for the Cougars on Sunday. Kazimieruk won all three matches in straight sets over the weekend to improve to 6-1 in tournament play.
Houston senior Elena Kazakova also competed in the finals on Sunday, falling to Rice's Leah Fried by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Newcomer Giorgia Pozzan got back on track in singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Tulane's Elizabeth Hamlin. Pozzan, who dropped her first match of the season on Saturday, improved to 6-1 as a Cougar.
Joanna Kacprzyk turned in a stellar performance with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Marcela Fonseca of Tulane, while freshman Jo Garvey claimed her first collegiate victory with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-6 triumph over Leah Smith of Lee College.
The Cougars have now claimed two tournament titles this season, as Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan prevailed as doubles champions at the Islander Open last month.
Houston will return to action at the ITA Regional in Waco, Texas, on Oct. 21-24.
