HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore infielder Jennifer Klinkert was named to the 2010 Preseason All-Conference Team as the designated hitter, it was announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office. The Chino, Calif., native joins 13 players to make up the preseason team as voted on by all nine conference head coaches.
"I'm excited for her," head coach Kyla Holas said. "I know she is ready to get back on the field after last year's injury. She has put in a lot of hard work to get back, and I am hoping she can have the year she has worked for."
In 2008, Klinkert led all C-USA freshmen in home runs (15), RBIs (55), total bases (104) and walks (42). She had one of the best offensive seasons for a freshman in program history, touching six top five single-season hitting records. Klinkert tied for first in runs scored (51) and walks and ranked second in RBIs, third in home runs and fourth in slugging percentage (.619) and on-base percentage (.458).
Klinkert received many accolades for her performance including All-Conference Freshman Team, C-USA Freshman of the Year, All-Conference First Team, C-USA All-Tournament Team and All-South Region Second Team as well as a two-time C-USA Hitter of the Week recipient.
Last season, Klinkert batted .700 in the Cathedral City Kickoff, including a 2-for-2 performance with a double hit against UC-Riverside. She went 4-for-4, scoring one run and recording three RBIs against Oregon State. During that game, she was injured. As a result, had to miss the rest of the season and was granted medical hardship for 2009.
