Awards Pour in After Memorable Victory
9/28/2009 12:00:00 AM | Football
Quarterback Case Keenum and defensive tackle David Hunter teamed up to earn the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. This was the second time this year that two Houston players have captured both awards in the same week - Case Keenum and Jamal Robinson were the recipients after week two.
Keenum led Houston on a 16-play, 95-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter that consumed almost all of the remaining time. This was the seventh career fourth-quarter comeback for Keenum and the second of the season (Oklahoma State).
David Hunter made his presence known on the third play of the game when he sacked Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts, forced and recovered the fumble. Later in the game, Hunter made another great play to force a fumble on running back Eric Stephens. Houston scored 10 points off Hunter's turnovers.
Lou Groza National Collegiate Place Kicker Award
Jordan Mannisto, the sophomore kicker from Westlake Village, Calif., was selected as a Star of the Week by the Lou Groza Award after connecting on 3-of-5 field goals and 3-of-3 on extra points. Mannisto set a new career high with 11 points scored.
Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week
The Davey O'Brien foundation has named Keenum as the Quarterback of the Week for week four. In the O'Brien Marque Match-up for week for, Keenum bested Taylor Potts as the Cougars earned the come-from-behind victory.
