Softball Sweeps Opponents in Sugar Land College Classic

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team begins its fall season undefeated as the Cougars registered wins over San Jacinto College (6-0), Texas State (2-1), Blinn College (7-0) and Galveston College (16-2) at the Sugar Land College Classic this weekend.
Saturday, Sept. 26 - Day 1
The Cougars began the Classic with a pair of wins over San Jacinto College and Texas State.
Houston notched a 6-0 victory over San Jacinto, a game that featured two homeruns from the big hitter of the game, Holly Anderson. The freshman infielder went 2-for-4 and with 3 RBI. Redshirt sophomore Jennifer Klinkert also recorded a homerun and went 1-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Junior Amanda Crabtree pitched seven innings recording 12 strikeouts, two BB and a hit.
The Cougars defeated Texas State, 2-1, in the second game. Freshman Bailey Watts pitched seven innings with eight strikeouts and three BB. Watts gave up seven hits and allowed one run.
Anderson and Angela Spittler scored both runs for Houston, and Klinkert and Melissa Gregson recorded one RBI each.
"The team really competed well today," head coach Kyla Holas said. "They had a few learning lessons but I am excited about what this team could do."
Sunday, Sept. 27 - Day 2
Houston concluded the tournament undefeated, notching victories over Blinn College and Galveston College.
Houston claimed a 7-0 win over Blinn in the first game. Junior Baillie Lott pitched all seven innings with three strikeouts and two BB. Lott gave up four hits but did not allowed a single run.
The Cougar offense had a big day with 13 hits and seven runs. Jennifer Klinkert led UH with three hits and two RBI. Katy Beth Sherman, Ashleigh Jones, Reina Gaber and Angela Spittler also had a multiple-hit game.
In the final game of the tournament, Houston beat Galveston by its largest margin of the weekend, 16-2.
Bailey Watts pitched through four innings with eight strikeouts and two BB. Watts allowed four hits and only one run. Amanda Crabtree finished the game, pitching three innings. Crabtree recorded eight strikeouts and one BB, allowing only two hits and one run.
Offensively, Houston put up the second double digit hit game of the day with 14. Every Cougar registered a hit in the game with three having multiples - Sherman, Jones and Anderson, who led the team with three RBI.
"We asked them to bring their offense after yesterday and the team responded," Holas said. "Pitching was working through some first day soreness but that is to be expected this early. I am glad we were able to get some outside competition for us to better gage our focus for the week. We look to take tomorrow off and then head back out to practice to get ready for Spring Klein and a much tougher schedule."
Next on the schedule for the Cougars is the Spring Klein Girls Softball League College Classic in Spring, Texas on Oct. 3-4.
