Women's Basketball Announces MVPs

HOUSTON - After enjoying a successful 2008-09 season, the University of Houston women's basketball team announced its Academic and Athletic MVPs, during the department's annual Athletic Awards Banquet. Senior Zane Jakobsone was named the team's Academic MVP, while sophomore Courtney Taylor was honored as Athletic MVP.

Jakobsone, a 6-1 forward, scored a total of 41 points throughout her Cougar career, after transferring from Trinity Valley Community College. A native of Riga, Latvia, Jakobsone is set to earn her degree in physical therapy this August.
Taylor, a 6-0 forward from Crockett, Texas, emerged as the leader of the team. She averaged a team-high and ranked among the C-USA team with16.6 points and 10.1 rebounds and also had 2.29 steals per game, which ranked fourth in C-USA. Taylor was named First Team All-Conference and selected to the C-USA All-Defensive Team. Against league champion SMU on Feb. 20, Taylor fell one steal short of just the fourth triple-double in school history, ending play with 23 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals. Returning
Taylor and nine other letter winners from the 2008-09 UH squad, which finished 19-10 overall and in a tie for second in C-USA. The 2009-10 Cougars will be among the favorites to challenge for the 2009-10 C-USA Championship.
