Track & Field Wraps Up First Day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN - Senior Morgan Floyd currently stands in 10th place in the men's decathlon competition, leading the University of Houston track and field team through the first day of the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the Mike A. Myers Track Stadium in Austin on Wednesday.
Floyd racked up 3671 points during the first five events, trailing the leader by less than 300 points. Floyd finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.90m (6-02.75) and took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.91m (22-08.00).
Wednesday also provided several Cougar freshmen the opportunity to compete in one of the nation's most prestigious track meets.
Anthony Jordan and Andres Santaollala set season bests in the 3,000-meter run, posting times of 10:10.59 and 10:24.07 to finish eighth and 10th in the university "B" section, respectively. Fellow freshman Nate Pineda led the Cougars with a seventh place finish.
Also running long distance for the Cougars was Jesse Rodriguez, who turned in a time of 4:04.78 to finish eighth in the 1,500m "B" section. In the women's 5,000m "B" section, Starla Garcia turned in a time of 18:22.88.
In the women's 800m "B" section, Ciera Johnson turned in a time of 2:21.75.
Competition resumes at 11 a.m. Thursday with the conclusion of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. Prelims for the 400-meter dash and the running of the 4X800m relays will also be held. Thursday will also see the beginning of the field events with the hammer throw scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
