HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team dropped just its third match of the spring on Sunday as it fell to No. 50 Tulsa by the score of 7-0 at John E. Hoff Courts.
"We competed and play well today, but did not win so we have got to get to the point where competing and playing hard but not coming up with the win is not good enough," said head coach John Severance. "Tulsa is a good team and is also really deep like we are, but the difference is they came in here and expected to win, where as we came into this match hoping to win. Today gives us a really good idea of some areas we need to improve on before the Conference USA Championship."
Tulsa, the two-time defending C-USA champions, entered Sunday's contest fresh off of road victories over Rice and No. 27 Texas earlier in the week and got the match off to a good start as it was able to sweep all three doubles matches to earn the afternoon's first point. UH's No. 3 doubles team of Laura Ring and Vicky Simpson gave TU's Rebcca Row and Alexandra Kichoutkin a run in the closest doubles match of the day, but could not pull out the win to fall 8-6.
In the singles portion of the afternoon, Kichoutkim was able handle senior Lynley Wasson at the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0, while TU's Jie Zeng defeated sophomore Laura Ring 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
UH second-year player Joanna Kacprzyk did not fair any better at the No. 3 singles spot, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Thalia Diaz-Barriga. At the No. 4 singles match junior Neila Starratt dropped 6-3, 6-2 decision to Anastasia Erofeeva, while after an extremely close first set in the fifth singles match, UH's Simpson fell 7-6, 6-2 to Row.
Freshman Alix Young was unable to come up with a win at the No. 6 single match, falling to TU's Ewa Saztkowska 6-2, 6-2, marking the first time the Cougars have dropped the final singles match all season. UH is now 16-1 this spring at the No. 6 singles match.
