Cougar Tennis Defeats Utah State, 6-1

LOGAN, Utah - The University of Houston tennis team won its second straight match Wednesday as the Cougars improved their overall record this spring to 14-2 by defeating Utah State, 6-1.
"I'm much happier with the way we played doubles today," said head coach John Severance. "We came right away in doubles and set the tone early. Our depth was a big factor today and that really showed with our performances at the bottom of our singles line-up. Overall, I thought we played a good match and we continue to improve."
The Cougars swept all three doubles matches with sophomores Lucy Forward and Laura Ring leading the way at the No. 1 doubles match, defeating Bridgette Strickland and Hailey Swenson 8-5. The tandem of Joanna Kacprzyk and Lynley Wasson won an 8-1 decision at No. 2 while Vicky Simpson and Jordan McCombs earned a win at the third doubles spot.
In the singles portion of the match, Kacprzyk was a winner at the No. 2 singles match, earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 decision over Strickland. At No. 3 Wasson was able to defeat USU's Monica Abella 6-2, 6-3, while Simpson earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Taylor Perry in the No. 4 singles position.
Junior Neila Starratt was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at the No. 5 singles spot over Carla Limon, meanwhile, McCombs defeated Britney Watts 6-3, 6-0 at the final singles match.
Houston's only loss of the day came at the No. 1 single slot as Forward feel to Hailey Swenson, 6-4, 6-4.

The Cougars conclude their three-match road trip Thursday when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho, to square off against Idaho State.
