Pocatello, Idaho--The University of Houston tennis team shutout Idaho State, 7-0, Thursday at Reed Gym on the indoor courts in Pocatello, Idaho, improving to 15-2 this season.
Houston began with a 1-0 advantage over Idaho State when sophomore Lucy Forward and senior Jordan McCombs defeated Sophie Dang and Stephanie Roldan, 8-3, in the No. 1 doubles spot and sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk and senior Lynley Wasson beat Risa Fujiwara and Lisel Lewis, 8-2, in the No. 2.
At the No. 1 spot in singles play, Lewis, who was the only Idaho State player to make an early comeback, was unable to capture the lead and would eventually fall to Wasson, 6-2, 6-1.
Dang, who also threatened a comeback, ultimately fell to Kacprzyk, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, while senior Vicky Simpson defeated Roldan, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
The No. 4 match lasted the longest as junior Neila Starratt would not allow Fujiwara, who lost the first set, 6-0, to fight her way back from a 1-0 lead to start the second set. Starratt would eventually take the final six games and win, 6-1.
In the No. 5 spot, freshman Alix Young won all twelve games in a row to take the match win, 6-0, 6-0.
The Bengals were forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match and No. 6 singles spot due to a reduced roster.
Houston returns to John E. Hoff Courts March 28 to play Texas-Pan America at 11 a.m. The Cougars will then play a Conference USA match on March 29 against Tulsa at 10 a.m. Houston is currently 3-0 in C-USA.
