Fort Worth, Texas - After holding its second practice in preparation for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, the University of Houston football team took part in a charity event.
Five Cougar athletes, along with cheerleaders and mascots Shasta and Sasha went to Cook Children's Hospital and visited with patients and handed out gifts. Also in attendance were selected members of the Air Force football team. This was the second year that UH participated in the event and it turned out to be one of the week's highlights.
"It means a lot to go to the hospital and see the smiles on the kid's faces, then you see the IV attached to their arm but they are still able to smile," said junior running back Andre Kohn. "Being an athlete, regardless of what you do on the field, the kids are just happy to see a football player in front of them. Any time we can put a smile on the kid's faces we are having a good time."
Earlier in the day, Houston held its second practice in Fort Worth. They will hold a final walk through on Wednesday and attend the Kickoff Luncheon before Thursday's game.
Houston enters the Armed Forces Bowl with a 10-3 record, while the Air Force Falcons are 7-5 on the year. The two teams met last season in the post-season event, with UH prevailing 34-28.
The 2009 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl will kick-off at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31 at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the TCU campus. The game will air live on ESPN.
