HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team swept the weekly Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Sophomore Beccy Hillis was named the Swimmer of the Week after recording four wins over the weekend in duals at Duke and at UNC Wilmington. The Scotland native swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events on Friday and Saturday. Her 200-yard breaststroke time of 2:16.80 on Friday was an NCAA `B' time and set the pool record at Duke's Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. The time was also the fifth fastest in school history.
In addition, she finished second in the 400-yard medley relay and was fourth in the 200-yard IM against Duke and Georgia Tech. Hillis also had a second and a fourth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay, respectively.
This the first career Swimmer of the Week award for Hillis.
Senior Anastasia Pozdniakova earned her 15th career Diver of the Week award after sweeping the 1- and 3-meter events last weekend. All four scores set pool records at Duke and UNC Wilmington, in addition to being NCAA `A' scores. Her 354.75 points against UNC Wilmington and Emory in the 1-meter competition was the sixth best total in school history.
Pozdniakova has won all diving events she has competed in this season, while this is her first Diver of the Week award for the 2009-10 season.
The Cougars will be back in the pool on Nov. 20-22 when they host the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
