FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A significant early deficit and its worst shooting performance of the season sent the University of Houston women's basketball team to its third consecutive defeat, as the team fell to Delaware 72-43 Friday in the opening game of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational.
The loss drops the Cougars' record this season to 3-3, meanwhile, Delaware improves to 3-2 on the year. Houston now looks to tomorrow's contest against the loser of Friday's Colorado State/Texas State match-up to snap their skid.
The game's opening minutes were not fortunate for the Cougars as after scoring the game's first basket on a 3-pointer from Roxana Button, the Blue Hens exploded for a 19-0 run which left UH with a 19-3 deficit and 14:23 to play.
After the initial Button made field goal, Houston missed its next 10 shots allowing the Blue Hens to take total control of the game.
Following the Delaware surge and a called timeout by head coach Joe Curl, the Cougars calmed themselves and went on a 24-16 run of their own to cut the lead to single digits at 35-27 on a 3-pointer from Brittney Scott with 4:06 to play.
The two teams traded baskets in the half's closing minutes but it was Delaware that took a 42-30 lead into the intermission. After their poor start from the floor, the Cougars found their rhythm from long distance, sinking 7-of-16 opportunities from long range, led by junior Megan Morton who came off the bench to shoot 3-of-3 from 3-point range. For the half, Delaware shot a blistering 50 percent from the floor, making 15-of-30 shots.
Unfortunately for the Cougars a poor shooting performance in the second half turn abysmal after halftime as they did not make their first field goal of the second half until the 12:50 mark on a Button jumper. Through the half's first 13 and half minutes Houston had made just 2-of-16 second half shots for a shooting percentage of 13 percent. UH was 0-of-9 from 3-point range in the second half.
The Cougars did not feature any players in double-figure scoring as they were led by Scott and Morton who each had nine points. For the game, UH shot just 27.8 percent (15-of-54).
Elena Delle Donne and Tesla Harris each contributed 21 points for the Blue Hens.
