HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team inks four new players to National Letters of Intent Thursday afternoon, head coach Kyla Holas announced.
Joining the Cougars are Diedre Outon, Haley Outon, Erin Martin and Stesha Brazil.
"This class is the group of players that we are expecting to take us back to the top of Cougar Softball," Holas said. "We are looking for the addition of these young ladies to compliment our current roster and really put push us upwards toward our expectations. I am proud to call this class Cougars and anxiously await their arrival."
Playing for Pflugerville High School and the Round Rock Blaze in the summer, the Outon twins will bring versatility to Houston. Diedre shows strength on the mound as well as serves as a true utilities player.
"We are looking for Deidre to be the type of pitcher that frustrates hitters," Holas said. "She brings a good drop ball, a change up and a good competitive spirit with her. We are hoping for her to be a compliment to our staff and keep the ball down and in the park. When she is not on the mound, Diedre can play both outfield and infield. Her offense from the left side will determine where she spends her time after pitching."
Haley has a wide reach of talent, ranging from behind home plate to the outfield.
"Haley is blue chip player," Holas said. "I expect her to really make a run at the record books offensively. What makes her different is that she can catch and play outfield. We will use her where she best fits this team, but you will definitely see her on the field and in the lineup everyday. We are excited to add that kind of hitter's mentality into our lineup."
Erin Martin plays for Allen High School and the Texas Pirettes. The infielder is expected to be a contributor on the field.
"We are looking for Erin to be a big time defensive player for us," Holas said. "She is going to have to compete for an infield position, but I think her arm will make her tough to beat. She is having a great senior year so far, and we are excited to see her add to her game."
Stesha Brazil plays for Hilmar High School out of Turlock, Calif., and spends her summers playing on her All American Sports Academy team. The catcher/infielder will bring diversity to the Houston team.
"We are looking for Stesha to bring her California experience and attitude," Holas said. "She has the potential to be great a hitter, and we look for her to make a run at catcher or third. She will be a great addition to our history of west coast players, and we are excited to have her be a cougar."
