Terry Has Career Night in Win over Marshall

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Marshall 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21) Friday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center behind a career night from freshman Jasmine Terry.
The Pearland, Texas native recorded a career-high 19 kills, with three digs and four blocks. She capped the night with the match winning block in the fourth set to top the Thundering Herd.
Freshman setter Tara Roenicke added a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Ingrida Zauere turned in a 12 kill, 12 dig, double-double performance. Junior Amanda Carson and senior Alik Cardoso de Sa also had 23 and 13 digs, respectively.
With the win, Houston improves to 8-19 on the year and 5-7 in league play. They are now 2-4 all-time against Marshall.
The Cougars opened with a 9-4 lead in the first set, before a timeout was called from the Marshall bench. The Thundering Herd came off the bench recording a 6-2 run to pull within one, 11-10. The Cougars continued to hold the slim lead before Marshall knotted the score 15-15. UH managed to take a two-point lead, 19-17, prompting a second timeout from the Marshall bench. The back-and-forth trend continued until the Thundering Herd were within one point of the home team, 21-20, forcing head coach Bill Walton to call his first timeout. UH came off the bench, scoring four of the final five points to take the first win, 25-21.
Terry notched seven kills to lead all players in the first set.
After a tough battle to open the second set, Marshall was able to pull away with a three point lead, 14-11, forcing a timeout from the Cougar bench. The Thundering Herd was able to maintain the lead out of the break until Houston tied the score, 17-17. After another tie score at 19-19, Marshall would pull away and even the series at two sets apiece with a 25-21 win.
Houston played from behind for much of the third set. They would, however, tie the score19-19 and the tack on three quick points to take a 22-19 lead. They would go on the take the win, 25-23.
UH dominated the fourth set, opening to a 7-2 lead and eventually extending that lead to seven, 13-6, before a Marshall timeout halted play. The Thundering Herd stormed back out of the break to pull within three, 13-10. The Cougars looked as though they would hold off their opponent but Marshall wasn't about to quit, as they would get within two, 17-15, forcing a Houston timeout to regroup. Houston came off the bench to take home the 25-21 win, capped by the Terry block to end the match.
Following the second set, Houston honored 30 alumni in attendance as part of the program's alumni reunion.
Houston will close out its home slate on Saturday at 7 p.m. against East Carolina at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Prior to the match the Cougars will honor their three seniors, Kinsey Cave, Alik Cardoso de Sa and Erin Rice for Senior Night.
The Cougars will then go on the road to close out the regular season. The three-match road stand begins at UTEP on Nov. 6, continues at Tulane on Nov. 8 and concludes at Rice on Nov. 12. The Conference USA Championship will be held at Rice on Nov. 19-21.
