HOUSTON - In the last match of the day to finish, junior Neila Starratt notched a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. four singles slot to lift the University of Houston women's tennis team to a exciting 4-3 victory over Idaho Saturday in Eugene, Ore. The win improves the Cougars' record to 2-0 this spring.
"This was a nail-biting, exciting match, especially this early in the season," said head coach John Severance. "Idaho is a very good team who should be in the national rankings. I'm extremely proud of our girls especially when they had to battle back after being behind in several of the early sets. Our conditioning was really a big strength for us today."
After being swept in all three doubles matches to drop the doubles point, the Cougars fell behind in the match and after sophomore Lucy Forward dropped the No. 1 singles match to Maria Perecoshchikova, UH faced an early 2-0 deficit.
Senior Vicky Simpson got the Cougars on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 6 singles match and freshman Alix Young evened the match at 2-2 by earning a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Yvette Le in the No. 5 singles slot.
In the No. 2 singles position, senior Lynley Wasson put UH up 3-2 with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory, but Idaho quickly tied the match at 3-3 with a win over the Cougars' Joanna Kacprzyk in the No. 3 singles slot. Starratt clinched Houston's second win of the season by defeating the Vandal's Jana Siwa.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow when they face Oregon in a 2 p.m. (CST) contest.
