EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Houston women's tennis team dropped its first match of the spring on Sunday, falling to Oregon by the score of 6-1 at the Oregon Tennis Complex.
"We may have lost the match today against nationally-ranked Oregon, but we can take a lot of positives away from today and this weekend," said head coach John Severance. "We took care of business against Portland State, we fought from behind and got a great comeback win against Idaho, and we competed like beasts against Oregon."
Freshman Alix Young nabbed the lone point of the day for the Cougars, earning a 6-4, 6-3 win over Siobhan Cavan in the No. 6 single slot.
"Alix finished the weekend in singles 3-0," added Severance. "Today, she played like an experienced collegiate tennis player. Not too bad of a way to start your career."
In the No. 1 slot, senior Lynley Wasson fell to Carmen Seremeta 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore Laura Ring dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the second singles flight. Junior Neila Starratt was downed by Oregon's Pavlina Smatova in the No. 3 singles position 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk dropped a split set match decision in the No. 4 singles slot, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 while senior Vicky Simpson was defeated in the No. 5 singles slot 7-5, 7-5.
During the doubles portion of the match, the Cougars tandem of Vicky Simpson and Lucy Forward were able to notch an 8-4 win over Oregon's duo of Pavlina Smatova and Stephanie MacFarlane. The victory was not able to propel UH into a win in the doubles spot as Oregon claimed both the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
"Although we came up a little short on doubles, it was something special to win the #1 doubles flight against a PAC-10 team."
