Tennis Sweeps Portland State, 7-0

PORTLAND, Ore.-The University of Houston tennis team defeated Portland State for its first victory of the 2009 season on Friday at the LP Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
Houston started the day by sweeping all three doubles matches, earning the first point of the dual.
The Cougars went on to sweep all six singles matches, to open the season on a winning note.
"It is nice to start the season off with a victory," head coach John Severance said. "We came out today and played well across the board in both singles and doubles."
In the doubles matches, sophomore Lucy Forward and sophomore Laura Ring combined to defeat Molly Knox and Caitlin Stocking, 8-3, in the No. 1 position.
Freshman Alix Young and senior Jordan McCombs paired to defeat Alyssa Ferry and Anya Dalkin at the No. 2, 8-4, while sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk and senior Lynley Wasson teamed to beat Victoria Bravo and Kylea Gleason, 8-1.
After capturing the point for doubles, Wasson beat Knox at the No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 Forward (6-1,6-2), No. 3 Kacprzyk (6-0, 6-3), No. 5 Young (6-2, 6-0) and No. 6 Vicky Simpson (6-0, 6-0) had no problems defeating their opponent.
Ring and her opponent Dalkin had the closest match, but after Ring won the first set, 6-4, she captured the match with victory with 6-1 second set win.
The Cougars's season-opening road trip continues this weekend as they travel to Eugene, Ore., to compete against Idaho at 7 p.m. (CT) Saturday and Oregon at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
"We are looking forward to the next two days playing a tough Idaho team tomorrow and a nationally ranked Pac-10 Oregon on Sunday," Severance said.
