Las Cruces, NM - The University of Houston volleyball team lost their final match at the 2008 Hotel Encanto Volleyball Classic hosted by New Mexico State University. The Cougars lost to Utah 3-0 with scores of 17-25, 21-25 and 16-25.
Houston (3-3) is now 4-2 all-time against the Utes and 0-1 this season in three set matches.
Senior Justine Farmer recorded 10 kills to pace the Cougars, while senior Kelsey King added 29 assists and sophomore Amanda Carson had 11 digs.
The Cougars opened the first set with a kill from sophomore Lucy Charuk and a service ace from freshman Ingrida Zauere but after three Utah kills and a service error by Stephanie Shardlow of Utah the score was tied at 3-3. Houston would keep the score close throughout the early points of the set until Utah began to pull away with the score 16-12, on a 4-0 run. From that point on, Houston would only be able to put five more points on the board and Utah would take the win, 25-17.
UH used a 10-0 run in the second set to take a 13-7 lead. It looked like the Cougars would be able to hold on for the win and tie the match but with the score 21-15 in Houston's favor the momentum would shift to the Utah bench. They would go on a 9-0 run of their own to regain the lead and take the 24-21 win.
Houston would not be able to recover in the third set and it would be all Utah. Despite four kills from both Farmer and Charuk, Houston would lose the set 16-25.
