Arlington, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team won its third-consecutive match Saturday afternoon defeating UT Arlington, 3-0 at the UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational. The Cougars defeated the Mavericks with scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-21.
In the win, Houston held UT Arlington to a .035 hitting percentage, the second lowest of an opponent this season. The Mavericks 22 kills were also the lowest total the Cougars have allowed in a match this season.
Houston (6-5) finished with a .365 hitting percentage, its highest this season and it marks the third time the Cougars have finished above .300 in a match this year.
Senior Justine Farmer and freshman Ingrida Zauere led the Cougars with double-digit kills for the second-straight match. Farmer finished with 12 kills, while Zauere had 11 kills.
Sophomore Amanda Carson added four service aces, giving her 10 aces this weekend in two matches. She now leads the team with 25 service aces.
The first set of the match was a match of runs for the Cougars. Houston trailed 4-5 early in the set but after its first 4-0 run, UH regained the lead, 8-5. UH added another 4-0 mid-way through the match to extend their lead, 19-10 and capped the first set win with its final 4-0 run to win, 25-13.
Houston continued the momentum to the second set, leading 9-1 from the start. They would go on to win the set 25-8. It marked the second time Houston had held an opponent under ten points in a set. The last time the Cougars did so was in a 25-3 win over Chattanooga in the third set.
The Mavericks played close with the Cougars in the third set, tying the game late at 20-20 but Houston would be able to hold on for the win. After the Cougars won the final set of the afternoon, Houston now stands at 2-2 in three set matches.
Up Next
After delaying the 2008 home opener a week as a result of Hurricane Ike, the Cougars will finally be able to play a match on their home court on Sept. 23 against Sam Houston State at 7pm. Following the mid-week match-up, Houston will open Conference USA play at Tulane and UTEP on Sept. 26 and Sept. 28, respectively.
