HOUSTON-- The University of Houston football team practiced in shorts and pads and announced team captains, voted by the team.
Senior Mark Hafner, senior SirVincent Rogers, senior Kenneth Fontenette, senior Phillip Hunt and sophomore Case Keenum were named the 2008-team captains.
Not only are the fans getting excited about the game on Saturday, but also the team got a special visit from someone else that is excited, President Renu Khator.
""We had our team meeting scouting report and then right after that Dr. Khator came in and talked about the importance of athletics here at the university and I think our guys really appreciated that," head coach Kevin Sumlin said.
Today, the focus switched from team chemistry to focusing on the Southern game. Surprisingly with it being the first day of class, the team was very focused and continued to practice at a quick tempo at a high level of intensity.
"We worked on special teams in situations, and then we introduced at a higher tempo, but not at a real physical level, situational-type offense and defense," Sumlin said.
The Cougars open their 2008 season at 6 p.m., Saturday, when they play host to Southern in the Cougar Football Classic on John O¹Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. It will be the first meeting between these two teams on the gridiron.
Fans can hear the game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, David Klingler providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sidelines. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
