HOUSTON - Fans of high-scoring, big-play football games will want to visit Robertson Stadium on the University of Houston campus during the 2009 season.
The Cougars will meet Big 12 Conference foe Texas Tech in a home-and-away series beginning in 2009, director of athletics Dave Maggard announced Friday afternoon.
Texas Tech will visit John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium on Sept. 26, 2009 with the Cougars traveling to Lubbock for a game on Sept. 25, 2010. Game times will be announced at a later date,
In 2007, the Cougars ranked No. 4 nationally with more than 500 yards of total offense per game, while the Red Raiders ranked among the Top-Seven national leaders in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense.
"Having a series with Texas Tech will be a great show for all of our fans," Maggard said. "This will be a game, like many others at Robertson Stadium, that the fans will not want to miss."
With such an exciting game planned for the near future, Maggard encouraged all fans to begin preparing for the 2009 season this summer.
"A game like this will only increase our season ticket sales this year as well as next year," Maggard said. "Fans should act now to be assured of the best possible location as this program becomes much more in demand."
Season-ticket plans are priced starting at $95 and are available by calling 713-GO-COOGS or visiting the Tickets link at UHCougars.com.
The 2009 meeting will be the first time that the Cougars have faced Texas Tech on the gridiron since the Red Raiders claimed a 38-26 win in the Houston Astrodome on Nov. 25, 1995. However, it will be the first time in series history that Texas Tech has competed at Robertson Stadium.
It also will be the second time in the last three seasons that the Cougars will welcome an opponent from a BCS conference into Houston. UH enjoyed a 34-25 win over Oklahoma State early in the 2006 season.
"We are pleased to schedule a Big 12 opponent like Texas Tech that has been ranked and nationally respected," Maggard said. "This continues our philosophy of scheduling some of the nation's top teams and bringing exciting football to Robertson Stadium."
Houston owns a 17-10-1 lead against Texas Tech in the all-time series, which began in 1951 and was played every year from 1976-95. However, the Red Raiders have won the last five contests.
Head coach Kevin Sumlin begins his first season at the helm of the UH program in 2008 after a stellar career as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Oklahoma.
The Cougars open their season at 6 p.m., Aug. 30, 2008, when they play host to Southern at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
