HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's tennis team wrapped up the 2008 regular season with three dominating wins on its home courts. The Cougars end the regular season at 15-10 and await the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships on April 17-20 at the John E. Hoff Courts.
In the morning match the Cougars knocked off Tarleton State, 5-2. Then, in the early afternoon, Houston shut out Prairie View A&M, 4-0, and wrapped up the day by shutting out Southern, 4-0. The three wins guarantee the Cougars a winning season for all four years under UH head coach John Severance (65-34 record) and sixth straight for the program.
"It was a good outcome for us," Severance said. "It is tough to play three matches in one day, both mentally and physically."
"We're ready for the Conference USA Tournament this week."
Against Tarleton State the Cougars took the doubles points despite dropping the #2 doubles match, 8-3. Lucy Forward and Jordan McCombs paired at #1 to defeat Shannon Jordan and Adriana Jaskova, 8-5, and at #3 Vicky Simpson and Leila Salek knocked off Jade Charlot and Evgeniya Prokofeva, 8-3.
As for singles play, the Cougars captured matches at #2, #4, #5 and #6. Salek bounced Chrissie Cooper, 6-1, 6-2, at #2, Lynley Wasson as victorious at #4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Charlot, Simpson two-setted Melanie Zilles, 6-1, 7-5, at #5, and Joanna Kacprzyk blanked Prokofeva, 6-0, 6-0, at #6 to wrap up the match.
Houston blitzed through Prairie View and Southern in the afternoon, taking the doubles point and three singles matches to wrap up the victories without completing the remaining three singles matches. In the PVAM match-up, UH breezed through the doubles action, taking #2 and #3 quickly with 8-1 scores, then battling to take #1, 8-6, when Forward and McCombs outlasted PVAM's Melanie Brown and Melissa Guerrier.
In the bottom half of the singles bracket, the Cougars dropped just two games to capture the match. Wasson breezed past Guerrier, 6-1, 6-0, Simpson shut out Jessica Aguilar, 6-0, 6-0, and McCombs took down Bianca Simpson, 6-0, 6-1. The three top singles matches did not finish.
Finally, the Cougars dominated Southern in their final match of the season. UH quickly took the doubles point, dropping just nine games in the process. Then, in singles play, it was again the bottom half the bracket that brought victory to Houston. Simpson whitewashed Sidney Lartique, 6-0, 6-0, at #5, and Wasson took down Bethlehem Workeneh at #4, 6-1, 6-1. At #6 Kacprzyk rallied past Gabrielle Marshall, 7-5, 6-0.
