HOUSTON -- The University of Houston baseball team returns to action when it plays host to UC Santa Barbara, starting at 6:30 p.m., Friday, at Cougar Field.
Sophomore Wes Musick, who was named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team, will be the starting pitcher in the opener of the three-game series. Musick (2-0) has an ERA of 1.32 and has fanned 12 batters in 13.2 innings.
The Cougars (6-4) enter Friday's match after defeating Sacred Heart on Wednesday 9-8. Jumping on the scoreboard early, Sacred Heart scored six runs in the top of the first inning, but the Cougars fought back, scoring two in the first inning, four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to give Houston the win for good.
It was the second-straight game and third time this season the Cougars rallied from a five-run deficit.
Sophomore right-hander Barret Bruce received the win, allowing only one run and one hit, while freshman Jared Ray earned his first career save.
Sophomore catcher Chris Wallace was 3-for-5 with a triple, double and career-high five RBIs. Senior first baseman Bryan Pounds had a hot bat as well doubling with two RBIs and drove in two runs.
This marks only the second time the two teams have met. The Cougars fell to the Gauchos 4-2 in 2003 at the Battle at the Beach in Malibu, Calif.
Sophomore right-hander Mike Ford, who is 1-0 with 17 strikeouts in two starts, will be the Gauchos' starting pitcher.
Junior Shane Carlson is the Gauchos' top hitter with a .405 batting average, and has added two doubles, one triple and two home runs.
