PHOENIX, Ariz. - In the first of three consecutive matches in the Desert Southwest, the University of Houston women's tennis team overpowered Grand Canyon University, 7-0, to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Cougars allowed just five set points while winning at all five spots at singles and at the two top spots in doubles. Houston won by default at #6 singles and #3 doubles.
"We got a lot out of this match," said UH head coach John Severance. "Our focus on this trip is Arizona State and Arizona, and this match gave us another opportunity to prepare for those two teams.
"It also gave us a chance to get used to the climate and elevation, which is quite different than what we are used to in Houston. We should come out tomorrow ready to play."
Leila Salek and Jordan McCombs started off the rout with a 8-1 decision over Grand Canyon's Sheila Johnson and Stephanie Handleman at #1 doubles, and then Neila Starratt and Vicky Simpson kept the pressure on the RoadRunners with a 8-0 sweep at #2 over Emily Rios and Amanda Jackson.
In singles play three Cougars posted 6-0, 6-0 wins: Salek at #1 over Stefanie Griffin; Wasson at #3 over Rios; and Simpson at #4 against Jackson. Izabella Glinska grabbed #1 singles with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Handleman, while McCombs wrapped up the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Johnson.
Houston returns to play tomorrow afternoon in Tucson against the University of Arizona. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 pm CST.
