HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to Southern Miss this afternoon at the Met at the Downtown Club.
Houston falls to 1-2 on the season while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0.
"The match did not go very well for us," said UH head coach John Severance. "That's as close as match can get (without winning it). Match was tied two-all and the last two remaining matches were tied five-all in the third set. You figure you're going to split those and go to doubles but we didn't luck out.
"Our inexperience and youth showed, and we couldn't pull out one of those two matches."
Senior Leila Salek took the #1 singles with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win over USM's Sherry Price, while junior Vicki Simpson captured the #5 singles with her 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Golden Eagle Lauren Gutterman.
Subbing for Lucy Forward, who was out with the flu, junior Lynley Wasson battled at #2 singles, before falling to Ali Blackett, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Freshman Joanna Kacpryzk also took her match to three sets, before dropping a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision to USM's Zoe Lee at #4 singles.
At #3 singles freshman Izabella Glinska was taken out in straight sets by USM's Stephanie Dellocono, 6-3, 7-5, and sophomore Neila Starratt fell at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-4, to Golden Eagle Shannon Rogers.
The Cougars return to action this weekend, traveling to the state of Arizona to square off against Grand Canyon on Feb. 8, Arizona in Tucson on Feb. 9 and finishing up the trip with a match against Arizona State on Feb. 10.
