DALLAS --- The University of Houston women's tennis team saw its six-match win streak stopped this afternoon in Dallas, as the #60-ranked SMU Mustangs posted a 7-0 win over the Cougars. With the loss the Cougars dropped to 8-5 on the year.
"Today we competed but we just didn't execute nearly enough," UH head coach John Severance said. "I thought we needed to win the doubles point to have a chance today. It's disappointing and we need to take advantage of our opportunities."
In doubles action the Cougars fought hard against the nationally ranked team, but lost all three matches to lose the point. At #1 Lucy Forward and Jordan McCombs fell to Natalia Bubien and Pavi Francis, 8-4, while the tandem of Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk dropped an 8-3 decision to the #38th-ranked doubles duo of Nicole Briceno and Kseniia Tokarieva. Rounding out doubles action, Leila Salek and Vicky Simpson were defeated by Kristen Reid and Jessica Yanoff, 8-4.
The Cougars found the road to victory even tougher in singles action, falling in straight sets in all six matches. Forward dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at #1 singles to Bubien, who is ranked #73 in the nation. Then, Salek lost a 6-1, 6-3 match to Tokarieva at #2 singles, Neila Starratt fell 6-2, 6-1 at #3 singles to Francis, and Wasson was taken out at #4, 6-4, 6-1, by Reid.
Rounding out singles action, Kacprzyk was beaten at #5, 6-1, 6-2, by Yanoff, and at #6 Simpson fell to Briceno, 6-3, 6-2.
The Cougars will take the next two weeks off before playing host to New Mexico State on Saturday, March 8, at noon at the John E. Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
