HOUSTON - Despite windy conditions, the University of Houston women's tennis team enjoyed the beautiful blue sky and 70-degree temperatures, rolling to its third straight win with a 6-1 decision over Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon.
Houston improves to 5-4 on the season and will face McNeese State at 2 pm tomorrow in a make-up from a scheduled Saturday encounter.
"This was a good match for us," UH head coach John Severance said. "(Northwestern State) lost to both UAB and Southern Miss by a close margin of 4-3, so it was important that we came out ready to play. We knew it was going to be a tough match because of how (Northwestern State) played those two Conference USA schools.
"We had a solid doubles match that really set the tone for the afternoon. Even in windy conditions we worked extremely hard to get this good win. We'll see if it carries over to tomorrow."
The Cougars took the doubles point but not without some drama. After Vicky Simpson and Leila Salek pounded out a 8-2 win at #3 over Daniela Posada and Adna Curukovic and the duo of Jordan McCombs and Lucy Forward fell 8-5 to Bogusia Patzer and Kathrin Lange at #1, the point came down to the #2 singles tandem of Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk. The pair bounced Marie Scriba and Bianca Shulz, 8-5, to set UH up at 1-0 heading into singles play.
In singles action Houston took five of six in winning the match. Only Forward at #1 suffered a loss, as the 2-through-6 hammered out wins over the Demons. Salek started the romp with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lange at #2, which was followed up by Simpson's 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Posada at #5.
Both Neila Starratt and McCombs had first-set battles before settling down for straight-set wins. Starratt took down Curukovic, 7-5, 6-3 at #3, while McCombs knocked out Marine Neveu, 7-5, 6-1 at the #6 slot. Finally, Wasson took three sets to dispatch Schulz, winning 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at #4.
At #1 singles Forward had a difficult time adjusting to the conditions, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Patzer.
