HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team snapped a four-match win streak Sunday afternoon with a loss to Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. The Cougars were defeated with scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-14.
With the loss, Houston is now 11-8 on the season and 3-3 in Conference USA.
Senior Justine Farmer had a game-high 13 kills in the match. Senior Kelsey King added 28 assists and sophomore Amanda Carson had 14 digs.
In the first set, Houston fell behind 5-0 to open play but would battle back to tie the score six times. The Cougars would knot the score 17-17, but three quick points by the Thundering Herd would put them back in a hole again and they wouldn't be able to recover, giving Marshall the early 1-0 lead.
Despite out-hitting Marshall, 8-to-12, Houston was unable to even the match with a second set win. Freshman Nataliya Panova recorded seven of the Cougars 12 kills on a .308 hitting percentage.
With one final chance to extend the match, Houston would need a win in the third set. However, the Cougars were held to six kills in the set and Marshall would come away with the 25-14 win.
Houston is now 5-5 this season in three-set matches.
