Women's Basketball Beats UCF 74-61 On The Road

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Houston women's basketball team earned its first Conference USA road win since 2006 after knocking off UCF 74-61, Thursday at the UCF Arena.
Houston (9-9, 3-1 C-USA) last won a league road game at UAB on Feb. 26, 2006, a span of eight games. UCF (7-10, 0-4 C-USA) dropped its fourth-straight game.
Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) scored a game-high 22 points, including three triples.
The Cougars blew a 16-point lead midway through the half, but took advantage of the Knights' 19 turnovers, converting them into 21 points.
"It was a big step for us to pick up a conference road win," interim head coach Danny Hughes said. "I was pleased with our defensive effort, but I still think we have yet to play a complete game. We struggled at times and didn't finish strong, but our kids stepped up in the end."
With the scored knotted at 46 with 10:04 remaining, UH used a 7-1 run in the next 90 seconds to pull ahead by six, 53-47.
The Knights were within four points three times, but a 12-4 Houston run moved the lead to double digits, 69-57, with 1:46 to go.
Courtney Taylor (Crockett, Texas/Crockett HS) tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cobilyn Hill (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) added 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. The Cougars totaled a 38-30 advantage inside the paint.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) struggled from the field, going 0-15. The senior, who has never been held scoreless in her collegiate career, tallied three points late in the game on free throws. She also added a season-high 11 rebounds and dished out six assists.
Trailing by 16, UCF used an 18-2 run over 6:17 to tie it up at 44 apiece with 10:56 left. UH was held without a point for a span of more than five minutes.
UH held the Knights without a field goal for almost nine minutes and outscored UCF 16-2 during that span to lead 42-26 with 16:13 left.
Tia Lewis grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds but was limited to only seven points. Emma Cannon came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points. D'Nay Daniels scored 11 and Marshal White dished out eight assists.
The Cougars led 26-25 at the half after McIntyre dropped in 13 in the opening 20 minutes, including nine in the last five minutes.
The Cougars closed the half on a 10-0 run over the final 5:10 after trailing by four, 20-16 with 7:48 left on the first-half clock.
UH held UCF to 22.9 percent (8-35) shooting and a 1-for-11 (.091) effort from behind the arc. The Cougars fired at a 40.6 percent clip (13-32) in the first half and shot 39.9 percent (25-66) for the game.
Houston returns home Sunday, playing against Southern Miss at 2 p.m. CST on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
