HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston football team scored twice again on Monday, when senior place-kicker T.J. Lawrence and junior strong safety Kenneth Fontenette were named Conference USA Players of the Week for their exploits in leading the Cougars to a 38-27 come-from-behind victory over Colorado State last Saturday.
Lawrence picked up the Special Teams award, while Fontenette shared Defensive POW with UCF's Jason Venson.
With the Cougars trailing 24-17 late in the third quarter against Colorado State, Fontenette scooped up a Kyle Bell fumble and raced untouched 37 yards for his first career touchdown, tying the score and shifting the momentum in favor of Houston. From that point on, CSU managed just three points and 69 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter.
Fontenette finished with five total tackles and his one-on-one coverage held CSU's Johnny Walker, the Rams top receiver, to just one catch for 18 yards.
In the crucial home win over the Rams, Lawrence nailed all five of his PATs and his only field-goal attempt, a 46-yarder that put the first points on the board for Houston. Lawrence remained perfect on his conversion attempts in 2007. On his seven kickoffs, Lawrence average 67.1 yards per kick, including one touchback and two that were returned out of the end zone.
This is the second weekly honor for Fontenette in his UH career. As a redshirt freshman in 2005, he picked up the league's weekly hardware when he forced and recovered a fumble in the waning seconds at Tulsa in the Cougars' 30-23 win.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, playing host to East Carolina at 6 pm at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
