HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team heads on the road for a pair of matches this weekend, taking on No. 4 Texas and Texas State.
Texas (4-1-1), ranked No. 4 in this week's SoccerBuzz.com poll, and UH matchup at 7 p.m. CDT in Mike A. Meyers Stadium. The Cougars and the Bobcats will face off Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Houston (3-0-1) is off to the best start in school history. The Cougars have been paced this year by junior goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS). Scott, the reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, has allowed just one goal in nearly 400 minutes of play, including three shutouts.
Freshman Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS) has two goals to her credit this year, topping the scoring chart for Houston.
The teams have not met since Oct. 7, 2001 when UT shutout the Cougars 4-0 in Austin. Texas leads the all-time series 2-1-0. Live video of Friday's match will be available at www.TexasSports.tv while live stats can be accessed at www.TexasSports.com.
The Longhorns and Cougars both enter the match having tied LSU their last time out. UH and the Tigers played to a 0-0 double overtime tie last weekend while UT and LSU ended a match Tuesday knotted at two apiece after 110 minutes.
NSCAA All-American Kelsey Carpenter who has tallied five goals in six matches this season leads UT. Former UH player Courtney Gaines, a summer transfer to UT, leads the team with three assists. Another former UH letterwinner, Jordan Godbolt, also left for UT and has seen action in four matches, tallying an assist.
Texas State (0-7) has struggled this year, scoring only a pair of goals in over 600 minutes of action. Most recently, the Bobcats dropped a 2-0 decision to UTEP at home last Sunday. Live stats for Sunday's match will be available at txstatebobcats.com
