HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team opens its fall 2007 season this weekend in the Rice Invitational. The Cougars will have a chance to face Lamar, Baylor, Texas, Arkansas State, Louisville, Texas-San Antonio, Texas-Arlington and Rice throughout the weekend.
"We're excited about the fall," head coach John Severance said. "We're playing some good teams over at the Rice tournament and we're looking forward to it. For the fall, we want a lot of match play and that's what we'll get. We're excited to start competing."
With over half the team being constructed by new faces this year, Severance is going to be focusing on action rather than wins this weekend.
"We're going to work on the fundamentals and our philosophy until we get it right," Severance said. "It's a work in progress. I'm not as concerned with what happens this weekend than that we're doing the right things. The more we do the right things the better we're going to be for the season, that's my main concern right now."
The first round begins at 8:00 a.m. in doubles and 8:00 a.m. for singles on Friday.
