HOUSTON - Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) made a career-high 11 saves as the University of Houston soccer team continued the best start in school history Sunday, earning a 0-0, double overtime tie with regionally ranked LSU on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
LSU (5-0-1), ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Central Region, entered the game as the fourth-best scoring team in the country.
Scott, a junior, was under all-out siege for most of the afternoon as LSU peppered the Houston defense with 32 shot attempts. Scott made several diving stops, including a shot in the 88th minute by LSU's Rachel Yepez that appeared to headed for the bottom corner of the net. Yepez finished with a match-high eight shots, four of which were on goal.
Scott, who is nearing UH's all-time wins mark, has allowed only one goal in almost 400 minutes of play this season.
"It's a great result for us against one of the top teams in the country," head coach Susan Bush said. "I have a lot of respect for LSU and coach (Brian) Lee. I'm very proud of our kids for sticking with them and executing our gameplan."
The Cougars backline, made up of two sophomores and two freshmen, was one of the team's biggest question marks entering the season. Through four games, Houston (3-0-1) has allowed just a single goal.
The defense suffered a further blow when starting center back Stephanie Beyelia (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak HS) went down with a leg injury in the 70th minute. Her status is day-to-day.
"I thought the girls really played for each other out there today," Bush said. "It's a total team win. We wanted to keep the ball in front of us, slow the game down and limit their good chances on goal."
UH came up with three shots, two of which were on goal, forcing LSU goalkeeper Valerie Vogler to make a pair of saves.
The Cougars return to action next weekend, facing a pair of tough road matches with No. 6 Texas at 7 p.m. CDT Friday and Texas State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
