Soccer Takes 1-0 Overtime Win Over Grambling State

HOUSTON - A goal by Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS) in overtime sent the University of Houston soccer team to a 1-0 win over Grambling State, Friday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Byrne's goal, her second of the year, moved the Cougars to a 3-0 start to the season for the first time in program history. Byrne dribbled through the GSU defense and took a shot from inside the 18 that sailed to the left of Tiger's goalkeeper Cherie Silas at the 99:01 mark on the clock.
Grambling State (2-4) dropped their third-straight match.
For the Cougars, it was a game of missed opportunities as they tallied 24 shots, including several that struck the post. Byrne had six shots on the night.
Jessica Rathweg (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) had five chances off the bench while Stephanie Booker (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point HS) and Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) finished with three shots apiece.
Rathweg missed a golden opportunity in the eighty-fourth minute when had an empty net in front of her but could not connect on a header.
The Cougars outshot the Tigers 11-0 in the first half. GSU didn't record its first shot until the 78th minute and tallied four in the second half.
Rodriguez and Nikki Echeverria (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS) had the best chances of the opening half on the same play in the 26th minute. Rodriguez made a solid strike that was saved by a diving Silas and Echeverria sent the follow up back in, but it was deflected out of bounds.
Silas finished the night with eight saves in the loss. Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) made three saves in the win. She needs five wins to tie UH's all-time goalkeeper wins record, held by Michelle Denomme', with 17 victories.
Houston returns to the field Sunday, taking on regionally ranked LSU at Noon CDT in Robertson Stadium.
