HOUSTON - After spending Day One of Cougar Camp indoors, the University of Houston football team headed outdoors this morning, taking part in a two-and-a-half hour practice in the heat and humidity of Southeast Texas. The Cougars will return to practice tomorrow morning at 10 am before taking Sunday off.
With the team running through several drills and workouts, the attitude of his team has impressed UH head coach Art Briles.
"I am very pleased with the intensity and the effort," said the 2006 Conference USA Coach of the Year. "I thought the guys came out with a really good attitude, a really determined attitude. That's the way we're going to have to play, and we understand that.
"We have set a high standard, and for us to maintain that standard, we have to be great every time we step on the field. We cannot afford normal days. We have to have outstanding days every day we practice."
Even with the humidity emanating throughout the morning practice, the Cougars enjoyed a spirited workout, a fact that Briles attributes to Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Larry Jackson and his off-season program.
"We're in great shape. It was a little humid this morning, which we know occurs this time of year," added Briles. "Our guys are in great shape, and we're ready to roll. We're still playing fast and thinking fast."
The Cougar coaching staff made a few roster maneuvers, as a pair of redshirt freshmen switched sides of the ball. Anthony Reasno, a wide receiver this past year, has moved over to the secondary, while cornerback/kick returner Teric Williams switches to offense, where he'll play wide receiver.
