Volleyball Falls to No. 25 Kansas State in Road Opener

Manhattan, Kan. - The Houston volleyball dropped the first road contest of the season against No. 25 Kansas State. The Wildcats earned a three game sweep over the Cougars with game scores of 30-18, 30-16, 30-23 at the Ahearn Field House.
Freshman libero Amanda Carson led the Cougars (1-1) with 14 digs while junior setter Kelsey King added a team high 21 assists.
Houston fell to 1-4 against the Wildcats under head coach Bill Walton and 3-4 in the all-time series. The loss gives the Cougars a 7-14 record in road openers under Walton and a 3-4 record since 2000.
Houston took an early lead in game three, holding on to a 19-18 margin. The Cougars were unable to respond to an 11-5 K-State run to close out the game.
Junior Justine Farmer added seven kills and eight digs while sophomore Ashley Calhoun added seven kills.
Freshman Robin Fitzgerald and junior transfer Barbara Freitas made their first appearances in a Cougar uniform. Fitzgerald added five assists in the losing effort.
The Wildcats were led by Rita Liliom and Angie Lastra who had 11 kills and 18 digs, respectively.
The Cougars will return home this weekend, playing host to the Houston Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
