HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team fell to No. 6 Texas in the opening game of the Houston Invitational. The Longhorns swept the Cougars in three games with scores of 30-22, 30-16, 30-19 at the Athletics/Alumni Building.
The Cougars (1-2) dropped their second straight game of the season and are 0-2 against the Big 12 in 2007 after falling to Kansas State on Tuesday. This is the first time the Cougars have started the season 1-2 since 2004.
The Cougars fell to 16-41 in the all-time series against the Longhorns and 1-3 since 2000.
Freshman setter Robin Fitzgerald led the Cougars in her first career start with 28 assists and freshman Hannah Sullivan added 10 kills.
Houston battled in Game Three, matching the Longhorns point for point early on, but Texas took a 9-8 lead and never looked back.
The Longhorns were led by Desinee Hooker and Michelle Moriarty who had 16 kills and 43 assists, respectively.
