HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team opened its 2007 campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Texas-Arlington (30-23, 30-24, 30-18) Friday night in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Junior outside hitter Justine Farmer paced the Cougars (1-0) with 25 kills on a .478 attack percentage. She added a team-high 17 digs, posting her 10th double-double in the last 11 games, dating back to last season. With the win, UH improved to 15-7 all-time in season openers under head coach Bill Walton, including wins in five of the last six years.
UH controlled the tempo much of the match, as it led most of the way in all three games. In the first game UTA (0-1) rallied with 3 straight points to tie the game at 15, but the Cougars responded with a 10-4 run of their own to seize control of the game.
UTA jumped out to an 11-10 lead in the second game, but the Cougars roared back to score six of the next eight points and never looked back. That would be the last time the Mavericks held the upper hand as UH never trailed in the final game.
Kelsey King distributed a match-high 44 assists, while freshman libero Amanda Carson corralled 11 digs in her Cougar debut.
Joining Carson were fellow freshmen Lucy Charuk and Hannah Sullivan, who also made their first career appearances, smacking 11 and 10 kills respectively.
The Mavericks were led by senior outside hitter Torie Dacus who posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Dani Johnson added 12 digs in the losing effort.
The Cougars return to action when they travel to face Kansas State at 7 pm, Tuesday in Manhattan, Kan.
