Cuevas Fires No. 21 ULL Past Softball

LAFAYETTE, La. - Brittany Cuevas fired a two-hit shutout to lift No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette past the University of Houston softball team 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Lamson Park on the ULL campus.
Cuevas allowed only a pair of singles to Angel Shamblin in the third and fifth innings. She struck out eight batters en route to her 23rd victory of the season.
Shamblin was tagged with the loss, dropping to 21-6. She was touched up for a season-best five earned runs on seven hits. It was only the fourth time in Shamblin's last 31 starts dating back to last season that she allowed more than two earned runs. The Florida native tallied four strikeouts against three walks.
The Ragin' Cajuns (36-12) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning using a Desi Chatman two-run homer with two outs. Codi Runyan opened the frame with a leadoff walk.
ULL tacked on another run in the third inning as Runyan delivered a two-out RBI-single to make it 3-0.
Lacey Bertucci lined a two-run homer that just cleared the left field fence in the fifth inning for the final margin of 5-0. Holly Tankersley kept the frame alive drawing a two-out walk.
