HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team posted five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon in game two of a Conference USA weekend series at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Before the doubleheader, the program presented a check to the Komen Houston Affiliate for $7,714 dollars. The money will go towards Breast Cancer research and was raised during the program's silent auction against Texas A&M last March.
Laurie Wagner headlined the Houston (34-14, 15-2 C-USA) offense with a 2-for-3 performance and three RBIs, while Barbie Love fired a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
"It was critical for our team to get on the board early," head coach Kyla Holas said. "That allowed Barbie to settle in with a lead. That was a huge bounce back performance for her. She worked extremely hard over the last two days watching video. That was huge for her to get back on track."
The Cougars (34-14, 15-2 C-USA) loaded the bases in the first inning as Jessica Valis started the frame with a leadoff single. Katie Bush and Elaina Nordstrom drew back-to-back walks to set the table for Christa Raley, who was hit-by-a-pitch to give Houston a 1-0 lead.
Two batters later, a wild throw to the plate by UCF shortstop Amber Lamb on a ground ball allowed Bush and Nordstrom to score. Laurie Wagner capped the frame with a two-run single down the left field line to make it 5-0.
That would more that enough run support for Love, who improved to 6-5 after retiring 14 of her first 18 batters she faced.
Wagner added another RBI-single in the fifth inning, while Christa Raley put the finishing touches on the 7-0 win with a RBI-ground out in the sixth inning.
Kacie Feaster headlined UCF (32-20, 8-9 C-USA) going 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
Houston and UCF finish the weekend series Sunday at Noon. Kids receive free admission to the Cougar Softball Stadium by wearing their jersey.
"We have to continue to play solid defense and set the tone early on offense," Holas said.
