University of Houston head football coach Art Briles came away especially pleased with his troops after his Cougar football team concluded its first week of spring practice with a one-hour, 45 minute scrimmage on the UH practice fields Saturday morning.
Until you look at the film, it's hard to evaluate," Briles said. "But, on the field I liked our intensity and the speed at which we played the game.
"I was pleased especially that we took care of each other and didn't get anyone hurt. You never want to have anyone get injured, but especially in situations like this."
The Cougars had both its first team offense and defense scrimmage against each other for 60 plays with redshirt sophomore Blake Joseph running the first team most of the time. Redshirt freshman Case Keenum also saw some action with the first team offense as well.
"We had a few bumps in the road on both sides of the ball, but that is why we are out here in the spring," Briles added. "We have eight more days and they have to be eight great days. We have to keep getting better and better so that next week is better than this week."
The offensive and defensive lines have been the units that have stood out for Briles during the first week of spring practice.
"They both have stepped it up a level, which is something they have to do," Briles said. "We need them to carry our football team and if they continue to improve, we have a chance to be great football team."
The Cougars return to practice on Tuesday afternoon, and will hold its second scrimmage of the spring next Saturday, March 30.
