HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team put its 7-0 loss at No. 29 Texas A&M from last weekend behind them with an impressive 7-0 sweep of North Texas Friday afternoon at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
The Cougars (6-1) continue their success at Hoff Courts, pushing their home winning streak to 22 matches.
"We're excited to get back to our winning ways after a tough match last time out against Texas A&M," head coach John Severance said. "Our goal is to get as much match experience for each of our nine players as we can. We need each one of our players to excel as we head into the meat of our schedule."
Rebecca Franzi and Sonja Nikolic set the tone early in doubles action, winning an 8-1 match at the No. 2 position. The Cougars grabbed a 1-0 lead as the freshmen duo of Anna Djananova and Neila Starratt earned their first win together as a pair with a hard-fought 8-6 decision in the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Lindsay Willeford made her Cougar debut with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 performance at the No. 6 slot. Starratt and Nikolic also won handily, dropping a combined three games from the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
Leila Salek clinched the match for Houston with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Loli Gomez came away with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at the top of the lineup.
Djananova completed the sweep from the No. 3 hole with a 10-6 super tiebreaker win.
Houston faces off against No. 61 Florida State Sunday afternoon. Severance will have a chance to square off with former Cougar head coach Jennifer Hyde.
"Florida State may be ranked No. 61, but they are a Top 40 program in my mind," Severance said. "We are going to have to play our tennis to have a chance to pull off the upset."
First serve against the Seminoles is set for noon. Admission to Hoff Courts is free.
