Cougars Begin Season-Long Road Trip In Orlando Friday ...
The University of Houston women's basketball team heads outside of the Houston city limits for the first time since Jan. 9, embarking on a four-game road trip with a game at UCF on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. CST.
It will be UCF's first trip to UCF Arena, the only venue in Conference USA the Cougars have not visited. It will be UH's last visit to the arena as the Golden Knights are in the midst of building a 10,000-seat, $107-million Convocation Center scheduled to open in the Fall of 2007.
UH sits at 7-13, 4-6 in C-USA play. UCF is 7-16 (2-8 C-USA) and has lost eight of 10, dating back to Dec. 31.
The Cougars face a season-long four-game road swing from Feb. 9 until Feb. 17, traveling to UCF, Southern Miss, Tulsa and SMU.
The regular season closes out at home this year, with Memphis and UAB on Feb. 22 and 24, respectively.
Houston will suit up seven players for the rest of the season after losing Maya Onikute to academics.
UH has struggled away from Hofheinz Pavilion this season, winless in nine road games, averaging just 50.7 ppg and shooting 31%. At home, the Cougars average 71.8 ppg and shoot 39.3%.
Against SMU on Jan. 27, UH set a pair of C-USA offensive rebounding records. The Cougars tied their own previous all-games record for most total rebounds (68) and set the mark for most offensive boards (36) in a game. Houston also finished that game with four players earning double doubles. While research is not complete, it appears UH is the first women's basketball teams to achieve that feat.
The Cougars probable starting five is: Alona Obaze (5-5/G), Tye Jackson (5-10/G), Ashlee' Joseph (6-0/F), Sunshine Misa-Uli (5-11/F) and Sha'Quaylon McKinney (6-3/C).
Jackson (21.2 ppg) is UH's leading scorer, and has has scored 10 or more points in each of her 14 starts with eight 20-plus point games, two games with 30 or more points and four double-doubles. Her season-best of 31 came against East Carolina (Jan. 10).
James has stepped up her play in the last five games, averaging 10.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg. She had her two double doubles in the past five games. Jackon's 23.0 ppg in C-USA games leads all league players.
Sunshine Misa-Uli has also had a strong showing over the past five games, averaging 11.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg.
Sha'Quaylon McKinney has come out of nowhere in the past five games, averaging 9.2 ppg and 8.0 rpg.
UCF counters with Amber Long (5-6/G), Francine Houston (5-4/G), Celeste Hudson (5-9/G), Keunta Miles (6-0/F) and Jackie Akers (6-1/C).
Houston and Miles are the teams' leading scorers, averaging 13.1 and 12.0 ppg, respectively. Miles leads the squad in rebounding, pulling down 6.8 rpg.
